October 2024 Newsletter

Fall into October 🍂

As the leaves turn golden and the air gets crisp, October brings a season of change and cozy moments. Join us this month as we dive into autumn's beauty, share a few updates and events then we'll send you off to celebrate all the joys this time of year has to offer!

October is a month dedicated to raising awareness about vital issues. This includes important topics like Mental Health, Domestic Violence, Breast Cancer, and SIDS. Many of us — whether personally or through friends and family — have been touched by these experiences. Remember, it’s okay not to be okay. We’re here to remind you of the resources and support that United Way offers for YOU.

Purple Thursday (October 17, 2024): On the third Thursday of October, we observe Purple Thursday, a day dedicated to wearing purple in support of domestic violence survivors. This simple gesture not only raises awareness but also sends a powerful message to survivors that they are not alone in their journey.

Looking for a fun way to spend your time, networking, with people who also care about Philanthropy? Emerging Leaders are your people! This dynamic group is designed to help participants increase their leadership impact in their organization, the social sector, and the community at large. In Emerging Leaders, you will discover, grow, and be energized. You will move forward with new resources and approaches for your unique leadership and personal journey.

Our Emerging Leaders are collaborative, great teammates, and good communicators. They seek others' input and opinions, use it to shape their ideas, and generate consensus. They have strong soft-skills and have emotional intelligence when it comes to dealing with others.

When you support us, you are investing in innovative, research based and results-focused initiatives. These initiatives coordinate the work of local programs, service providers and community stakeholders in the Chippewa Valley. Each Program Partner is funded under a specific initiative that is driven by a bold goal that keeps everyone working toward the same mission.

Bold Goal:

Chippewa Valley residents will have access to food, shelter and medical services in their time of need.

Program Description:

West CAP is one of over 1,000 Community Action Agencies (CAAs) across the United

States created during the War on Poverty in the 1960's to provide local solutions to fight

poverty. Our mission is to take action against poverty by developing the social and

economic assets of low-income individuals and their communities and by working to

create a more just and sustainable society. We serve seven counties in west-central

Wisconsin including Barron, Chippewa, Dunn, Pepin, Pierce, Polk and St. Croix. Poverty is a complex problem that requires the coordination of programs and services across a

broad range of solutions. Our programs have evolved over the years based on local needs and funding opportunities. We currently have 80 full time staff who offer program

assistance in the areas of Adult Education & Literacy, Food Access, Energy Assistance,

Home Weatherization, Homeless Intervention, Housing Assistance, Housing Development, and Transportation.

How does UWGCV strengthen your program?

UWGCV funds are used to support the work of our Homeless Intervention Programs.

These programs help individuals and families experiencing homelessness or who are at

risk of homelessness achieve housing stability through a combination of medium and

long-term rental assistance, in-home case management, and connection to community

resources. Homeless Intervention staff members work to match individuals and families

with programs that meet their needs across Barron, Chippewa, Dunn, Pepin, Pierce, Polk, and St. Croix counties in west central Wisconsin. UWGCV funding is critical to support this department and to help us meet our HUD funding matching requirements to keep this program serving the greater Chippewa Valley. Our program objectives include: Move households into housing within 60 days of program enrollment, Help participants receive public benefits to ease the household’s financial burden, Assist participants in establishing a positive rental history, Help participants find housing in desirable neighborhoods/towns that are close to resources (parks, schools, community centers), and Overall stability and higher quality of life for families and communities. In our FYE 2023, West CAP's Homeless Intervention Programs served 22 Chippewa Falls

households, totaling 32 individuals. Services included weekly to monthly in-home case

management, monthly rent assistance, utility assistance, food assistance, life skills

coaching, and rental counseling.

What is your greatest program need?

Our greatest need beyond funding would be for household products to give to those who

are coming from a homeless situation and are being housed - small vacuums, cleaning

products, brooms and dustpans, paper towels, toilet paper, box fans, and lightbulbs.
