Addressing Mental Health Issues in our Community

Mental health issues affect many in our communityAffordable access to mental health care should be available in the Chippewa Valley so individuals and families can use it when needed. The entire community would be targeted in terms of awareness, education, and prevention efforts, with special priority for those living below 200% of federal poverty guidelines.

The number of people worldwide diagnosed with mental illness has been increasing during the past decade; however, mental health prevention resources are underfunded. Cuts in mental health services often results in increases for other, often unnecessary, health care costs. Collaboration between the medical community, government agencies, community organizations, and trained mental health professionals is essential in establishing a comprehensive model that promotes integration of counseling, treatment, and health care. To improve mental health services, the stigma attached with mental health needs to be addressed through education and awareness throughout our society.

Programs working under the Community Health Initiative have come together under a comprehensive plan to focus on our community’s mental health needs.

Youths and young adults are particularly at risk for mental health issues

These programs provide the following:

  • Outpatient counseling services to children and their families in the Chippewa Valley
  • School Based Mental Health Services
  • Access to mental health care for low-income adults
  • Peer-to-peer support groups and Peer Support Specialists utilizing evidence- based recovery principles to help people achieve personal recovery

By bringing together and supporting these programs, we are building deeper collaborations between programs, improving access and availability of quality mental health services, as well as increasing awareness and reducing the stigma of mental health issues.
